Police Reserves
The Edina Police Reserves are a team of volunteer officers who donate their time and effort to the City and the community in a variety of roles to assist the Edina Police Department.
Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some are interested in a law enforcement career and others wish to provide worthwhile community service by contributing to the safety and security of Edina.
The primary purpose of the reserves is to assist the department whenever needed. This can be on very short notice. Callouts can be for any number of reasons -- day or night -- including severe weather conditions, serious car accidents, fire scene protection, lost/missing person searches, crime scene protection, power outages or special details as needed by the Police Department.
Reserve Officers work a regularly scheduled patrol shift on Friday or Saturday night. Reserve Officers manage traffic control, provide general security at many special events and are also called upon to assist the Police Department with training exercises or mock disaster drills. Reserve Officers may also be asked to assist other cities with emergencies or special events.
Requirements to Become a Reserve Officer
You must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be of sound physical and mental health
- Have a history of good personal conduct
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency
- Possess a valid Minnesota driver's license
- Successfully pass an oral interview
- Pass a background investigation
- Be able to commit a minimum of 10 hours per month
- Attend monthly meetings
- Attend Hennepin County Sheriff's Police Reserve School for 10 weeks
- Be on patrol a Friday or Saturday evening once or twice a month
The Edina Police Department does not offer financial compensation for its Reserve Officers, but you will be provided with a standard Reserve uniform and equipment.
Reserve Structure
There are approximately 20 Police Reserves in the unit. The unit is supervised by three licensed officers. Within the Reserve unit, there is a captain, lieutenant and two sergeants. The ranks of the captain, lieutenant and sergeant are elected positions with terms of one year each.
