Fourth of July Parade
Celebrate Independence Day by attending Edina's annual parade!
Edina will mark Independence Day with a Fourth of July parade, concert and fireworks. The hour-long parade begins at 10 a.m. behind Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St and proceeds one mile east on 50th Street to the U.S. Bank parking lot at Halifax Avenue. Presenting sponsors are Lunds/Byerly’s and U.S. Bank. Music and fireworks will be held at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St., beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The 2016 parade is organized by the Edina Community Foundation with support from the City of Edina. This year’s theme is "A Celebration of Edina Athletics.” The hour-long parade will feature marching bands, clowns, floats, veterans, dogs and more.
Parade Grand Marshal
The 2016 parade’s Grand Marshal this year will be Local sportswriter John Sherman. In the past 50 years, Edina High School has claimed over 150 state championship titles in more than a dozen different sports. Sherman may be the only Hornets fan who can boast of witnessing the majority of these championship wins firsthand. Sherman has been covering the local sports scene in Edina for nearly 43 years – his entire sports journalism career.
Sherman began work as a reporter and editor for the Edina Sun-Current fresh out of college in 1972, the same year saw the “Title IX,” federal legislation aimed at ensuring girls receive equal opportunities in school sports was passed. Last year, in recognition of that early, equitable treatment of girls’ athletics in Edina, the National Girls and Women in Sports Coalition named Sherman a recipient of its prestigious Media Award.
Sherman wears many hats at Sun Newspapers. In addition to covering Edina, he reports on sporting events in Hopkins, Minnetonka and Wayzata, too. An accomplished coach in his own right, Sherman also enjoys working hands on with teams in different sports and at varying skill levels. He has been coaching basketball and baseball for almost 40 years each.
Additional Details
The Edina Parade will also feature many other Veterans, Edina associations, civic organizations, and some organized neighborhood groups.
Organizers recommend spectators arrive early, since an estimated 20,000 people will attend the parade. The parade will also be broadcast live on Edina Channels 16 and 813 and will be air throughout the month.
As is tradition, the First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band will perform the evening of July 4th before the sky lights up. The music begins at 8:30 p.m. and fireworks, sponsored by Fairview Southdale Hospital, begin at 10 p.m.
