Neighbor's Home Watch
An effective tool used to reduce and prevent crime, Neighbors' Home Watch is a cooperative effort between the Edina Police Department and the residents of Edina. As an interactive program, Neighbors' Home Watch puts emphasis on the prevention of property crime, especially residential burglary and theft from auto.
How to start a Neighbors' Home Watch group?
Contact your neighbors and pick a date for an informational first meeting. Most meetings are held Monday through Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at a neighborhood home. You need to confirm the date with the Edina Police Department.
You must gather a group of a least 10 households or half the number of units in a multiple-unit dwelling to move forward.
At the initial meeting, residents will learn about the Neighbors' Home Watch program and get an overview of crime in Edina. Crime prevention informational materials will also be distributed.
If your neighborhood ends up establishing a Watch group, two yellow Neighbors' Home Watch signs will be hung in your neighborhood. The Edina Police Department will also supply to each household member a Neighbors' Home Watch window cling.
How to Maintain an Active Status?
Your Watch group must meet yearly and the Neighbors' Home Watch Coordinator must attend the meetings. At least half of the original number of participants must be present at every annual meeting. Neighbors' Home Watch signs will be removed if the status of the group becomes inactive.
Annual Meeting Topics:
- Residential Security
- Personal Safety
- Residential Fire Safety
- Predatory Offender Guidelines
- Identity Theft
Edina Chief of Police Dave Nelson is also available to speak at meetings as well as other City personnel.
