Economic Development
Economic Development
The City of Edina strives to be the premiere place for living, learning, raising families and doing business. Edina’s business community is thriving, from Edina’s downtown at 50th Street and France Avenue, to Grandvew and Southdale.
Edina, a first-ring Minneapolis suburb, is well situated in the southwest metro six miles from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and about 10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. It is situated along several major highways, including Minnesota State Highways 62 and 100, U.S. Highway 169 and Interstate Highway 494. Edina is also served by several Metro Transit bus routes. Edina is easily connected to the entire metro, making it an attractive place for a variety of businesses.
Thriving business clusters dot the City, from the popular retail centers to the thriving healthcare and professional office complexes to light industrial and production facilities. While Edina’s population is 47,941 (U.S. Census 2010), more people work in Edina than actually live here resulting in a daytime population of more than 50,000. Fortune 500 companies, regional headquarters and local start-ups have selected Edina s their base for business operations. Major employers in the City include several Fortune 500 companies such as SpartanNash. Other major employers include Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina Public Schools, City of Edina, BI Worldwide, SpartanNash, Regis Corporation, Lunds & Byerlys, Jerry's Enterprises, International Dairy Queen, Edina Realty and Dow/FilmTec Corporation, among others.
Major commercial shopping nodes include 50th & France, Edina’s downtown; Southdale Center, the nation’s first full-enclosed shopping mall; and Edina Galleria, an upscale shopping mall connected to the Westin Galleria Hotel.
Local business start-ups thrive in Edina, like Evereve and Yogurt Lab, which start locally, then expand regionally and nationally. Both of these companies are headquartered near 50th & France.
Downtown Edina, a unique business neighborhood at West 50th Street and France Avenue on the border of Minneapolis and Edina, features more than 175 retail and professional services and 20 restaurants.
Prosperity has not happened by chance in Edina. The City has established several redevelopment districts to achieve outstanding success working in the spirit of public-private cooperation. Examples of this sprit include Centennial Lakes Park and Edinborough Park.
One of the City’s goals is to create a diverse and dynamic economy through the development of new businesses and the improvement of existing businesses. To achieve that goal, the City provides many tools and resources for Edina’s business community to prosper.
City staff is available to work with existing and potential businesses on:
- Building expansions and new construction projects;
- Providing assistance throughout the approval processes;
- Locating available commercial and industrial sites for new and expanding businesses (existing buildings and vacant land); and
- Identifying possible state, county and city financial assistance programs.
