Public Invited to Grandview Open House
Edina, Minn., April 7, 2015 – Mark your calendars for the next step in the redevelopment planning for the City’s former Public Works site, 5146 Eden Ave. An open house will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
Over the last five months, the design team has considered hundreds of comments and suggestions received by the general public as they prepared preliminary scenarios for the vacant 3.3-acre site. At the open house, the team will explain the updated scenarios and take additional community comment.
“Since the City began its development planning partnership with [the consultant] Frauenshuh [Inc.] in 2014, the design team has received a great number of suggestions regarding use of the site,” said Economic Development Manager Bill Neuendorf, who is managing redevelopment throughout the Grandview area. “While community opinions are diverse and widely varied, there is general support to create a new community-owned destination that is complemented by adjacent private investment.”
The original scenarios continue to be refined based on input collected from Edina residents. Each scenario shown at the open house includes a prominently located community facility with an adjacent outdoor civic plaza, structured parking, residential units, new office space that is receptive to the market demand and potential retail and restaurant space to satisfy the needs of the neighborhood.
“Based on the recent direction from the City Council, the community space is likely to be focused on arts and culture with an emphasis on creating a community gathering space that can be used for a variety of community purposes and is welcoming to all age groups,” Neuendorf said.
Each scenario will also include preliminary financial modeling to gauge the feasibility and economic impact of the potential project.
Following the April 22 open house, the updated scenarios will be posted on the City’s website and on www.SpeakUpEdina.org for additional public comment. A traditional suggestion box will also be located at various sites near the Grandview area over the weeks that follow.
The City Council is expected to decide on the direction of the site’s future in June.
