City Accepts Grant for Increased DWI Enforcement

Edina, Minn., April 9, 2015 – The Minnesota State Patrol Division of the Department of Public Safety recently awarded the Edina Police Department a four-year DWI enforcement grant to reduce drunk and impaired driving on Edina roadways. The grant will allow for an additional officer on Edina’s police force. The City Council approved full implementation of the program at its April 7 meeting.

For 2015, the Department will be reimbursed up to $198,500 for the purchase of a new vehicle, equipment, training, officer salary and other expenses incurred as part of the program.

“This is an awesome opportunity for us to continue with one of our primary goals of safe streets,” said Police Chief Dave Nelson. “This grant provides for an officer to focus on traffic safety and reduce the number of impaired drivers on the streets and highways in Edina.”

The program is set to be implemented June 1, 2015, and will remain effective until 2019. The DWI officer will primarily work nights and weekends.
