City To Continue Conversation For Grandview Site
Edina, Minn., Feb. 19, 2015 – How can a new community facility work together with a new private building on the City’s former public works site at 5146 Eden Ave.? The City of Edina will hold a meeting to discuss preliminary redevelopment concepts for this site.
All are welcome to attend a “Discovery Session” 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at the Edina Public Works & Park Maintenance Facility, 7450 Metro Blvd. At this meeting, the consultant will share the ideas collected so far and show how different uses on the site could potentially work together to promote efficiencies for all. This session will be highly interactive with several small displays focusing on a specific aspect of the site plan. Each display will be staffed by the project team so questions can be answered and feedback heard.
“Since the new process kicked off in December 2014, the City has collected hundreds of ideas from the community,” said Economic Development Manager Bill Neuendorf, who is managing the redevelopment project. “We have been listening to ideas and concerns expressed in both large group and small group meetings conducted over the winter months. We have collected additional ideas and comments via online conversations and through a traditional suggestion box.
“So far, there appears to be strong interest in four types of public facilities developed in conjunction with private buildings on the site,” he said. “The uses with vocal supporters include: community recreation center, community arts and cultural center, community performing arts center, and a multi-purpose community space that has programming for all ages and includes both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.”
The current site planning process is conducted by the City in partnership with Frauenshuh, Inc., a Bloomington-based real estate developer supported by a team of architects, planners and construction advisors.
All community comments are being considered as the team begins to prepare three possible development scenarios that will be unveiled at an open house April 22. The scenarios will reflect different combinations of uses and site design, and each will include preliminary financial modeling to gauge the feasibility of the potential project. Ultimately, the City Council will be asked to select one scenario in June.
“We, as a community, including three advisory teams, have been talking about this site and the Grandview District for more than five years,” Neuendorf said. “The first step in the achievement of the 2012 community vision rests with selecting a direction for this vacant site.”
