Ryan Elasky Named 2014 Reserve Officer of the Year
Edina, Minn., Feb. 12, 2015 – Ryan Elasky was recently named Edina Police Department’s 2014 Reserve Officer of the Year.
According to Police Chief Dave Nelson, Elasky was selected for to his dedication to the program and willingness to fill open shifts at special events on short notice.
When an individual is selected as a Reserve Officer it is expected that he or she volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per month – 120 hours per calendar year. In 2014, Elasky volunteered a total of 256 hours – more than double what was expected – all while maintaining his current job as a Community Service Officer for the Eden Prairie Police Department.
“When we select the Reserve Officer of the Year, we look at several things: overall commitment, hours served, availability and overall willingness to volunteer their time at a moment’s notice,” said Patrol Officer Darin Cizek.” According to Cizek, Elasky is exactly the type of person the Police Department looks for when recruiting Reserve Officers.
Of his 256 hours, Elasky spent 153 hours patrolling City streets and parks. The remaining hours were spent working special events like the Edina Art Fair, the Fourth of July Parade, Edina Homecoming and more.
“I am very grateful to the Department for picking me,” said Elasky. “All of the Reserves are outstanding members; they contribute just as much as I do. I have big shoes to fill,” he said, pointing out that his father is Deputy Police Chief Jeff Elasky. “It’s a big accomplishment for me. It’s a good stepping stone.”
In the future, Elasky hopes to gain more time with the Reserves, gain additional experience in law enforcement and become a Police Officer.
“Law enforcement is a passion of mine, as is giving back to the community. I love going out and patrolling and helping other officers -- it’s just something I really enjoy doing.”
