Edina City Council Declares Days of Remembrance

Edina, Minn., March 28, 2013 – To honor the victims of the Holocaust and continue to advance human rights and relations, the Edina City Council has declared the week of April 7-14 as “Days of Remembrance” in the community.

The City Council approved a proclamation in 2012 regarding the Days of Remembrance which reads:

“Whereas, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies and governments; and

“Whereas, we, the people of the City of Edina, should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny; and

“Whereas, we the people of the City of Edina should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and

“Whereas,  the Days of Remembrance are set aside annually, occurring in April or May, to coincide with the national celebration of Yom Hashoah for the people of the City of Edina to remember the victims of the Holocaust, as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples; and

“Whereas, pursuant to an Act of Congress, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates annually the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, including the Day of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah.

“Now, therefore be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Edina does hereby recognize the Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of the City of Edina, will work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs.”

In recognition of Days of Remembrance, special documentary programming will air on Edina 16 throughout the month of April. The four documentaries are “I Was Given Life Twice,” “In the Shadow of the Acropolis,” “Stolen Youth” and “But Some Survive.” These will air back to back Sundays at 7 a.m., 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.; Mondays at 10 p.m.; Tuesdays at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. These showings will be followed by a recording of a Day of Remembrance event held in 2011 that features Fred Baron, a holocaust survivor, telling his story.
