Police Explorers Win Four Awards
Edina, Minn., November 7, 2016 – The Edina/Eden Prairie Police Explorers took home four awards during the 21st-annual Duluth Explorer Conference.
Twelve Edina/Eden Prairie Explorers attended the Oct. 21-23 event at Fond Du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, Minnesota. They competed against about 150 other Explorers across the state in individual and team events. The competitions were designed to challenge the Explorers and sharpen their skills by providing realistic scenarios that professional police officers encounter.
Edina/Eden Prairie Police Explorers received these awards:
1st Place –Police Exam
1st Place – Hostage Negotiation
1st Place – Domestic Crisis Intervention
3rd Place – Field First Aid
“They performed very well,” said Edina Police Officer Nicole Frederick. “They took home a lot of awards, and we’re very proud of them.”
Frederick, along with Edina Police Officer Richard Harr and Eden Prairie Police Officers Rob Johnston and Matt Schmidt, accompanied the Explorers to the event. Edina Police Officer Ben Wenande volunteered countless hours helping the Explorers train weekly.
“My hat is off to the advisers who dedicate so much time to training these kids,” said Edina Police Chief Dave Nelson.
Explorers are youth ages 14 to 21 who are interested in law enforcement. The Edina and Eden Prairie Police Departments work together to run a joint Explorer program.
Aside from the weekly training sessions, Explorers in Edina perform police-related community service such as traffic control and working at special events. The Edina Police Department has hired several former Explorers as police officers.
