Hennepin County Offers Master Composter Class in Edina
Edina, Minn., Sept. 8, 2016 – Hennepin County and the City of Edina are working together to help achieve the County’s goal of reducing the amount of organics that is thrown into the trash by 3 to 5 percent by 2030. The City is offering free tabletop compost buckets for residents and the County will hold Master Recycler and Composter Classes at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. Classes will be held 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 5 - Nov. 9.
Master Recycler and Composters are trained on waste prevention, recycling and composting through this six-week course that features industry experts and field trips to local waste processing and recycling facilities. The optional field trip will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14. Transportation is provided.
“The Master Recycler/Composter Classes are a great way to learn about what is recyclable and the challenges with items that you think should be able to be recycled and aren’t, or what is compostable and what is not,” said Recycling Coordinator Solvei Wilmot. “It also shows how easy it is to do either recycling or composting.”
Course topics include:
• Waste prevention
• Recycling processes
• Household hazardous waste and alternatives
• Organics recycling and home composting
• Zero-waste events
• Public engagement and the psychology of sustainable behavior
Classes are taught by professionals from the public and private sector who are working on innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Course graduates agree to volunteer 30 hours putting their skills to work to help others learn more about reducing the amount of natural resources used, reusing material and recycling what cannot be salvaged.
Space is limited; the course costs $30 and includes all course materials. To register, visit hennepin.us/masterrecyclers. To obtain one of the City’s free tabletop compost buckets for residents, visit Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or learn more online at EdinaMN.gov/compost_buckets.
For more information regarding the classes, contact Master Recycler/Composter Program Coordinator Carolyn Collopy at 612-596-0993. For more information regarding the compost bucket, contact Wilmot at 952-826-0463.
