City Reminds Residents to be Aware of their Surroundings While Playing Pokemon Go
Edina, Minn., Aug. 10, 2016 – After a young boy was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center after a bicycle accident while playing Pokemon Go Aug. 3, the City reminds residents to stay safe and be aware of their surroundings while playing the popular game.
Pokemon Go is a popular new video game for smart phones that people of all ages have been enjoying since its release in July. The game uses the phone’s GPS and camera to make the game come alive in reality, and make users feel they are catching Pokemon in their own backyards.
Here are some tips to keep players safe:
- Do not play the game while driving or riding a bike. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, distracted driving is a factor in one out of four crashes each year in Minnesota.
- Avoid suspicious locations. If you’re playing at night, make sure that people can see you and that you’re in a well-lit area.
- Do not trespass. Players must stay off of private property.
- Stay out of parks while they are closed. Parks are the perfect place to play the game. However, City parks close at night. Most City of Edina parks are open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Centennial Lakes Park is opening from 6 a.m. to midnight.
- No smoking or alcohol is allowed at City parks or facilities, including Centennial Lakes Park.
- Be respectful. Remember, oftentimes there are others enjoying the City’s parks and amenities who are not playing the game. Make sure to watch where you are walking and be courteous to those around you.
