Edina Police Department Swears In New Officer

Edina, Minn., Aug. 5, 2016 – The Edina Police Department swore in new Police Officer Alex Babcock Thursday, Aug. 4. He was joined by friends and family from across country at the swearing-in ceremony, held in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Babcock became interested in the law enforcement field at the age of 14 when he worked for the city of Sandy, Utah, as a referee. He was interested in being involved in a career that was community oriented. His uncle, who works for the Eagan Police Department, also served as inspiration. Babcock then pursued a degree from Winona State University in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Political Science.

For the City of Edina, Babcock has worked in a couple different roles since May 2015, starting as a Police Intern, and then promoted to a Community Service Officer until he was hired as Police Officer.

“So many people want to be police officers, but in actuality, very few get the opportunity to serve their communities,” said Deputy Chief Jeff Elasky. “Out of 40 people we brought in for interviews, Alex was the only one who rose to the top.  He was a very good hire; his outgoing personality, commitment to serve and attention to detail will serve the residences of Edina well. “

He started his official work as a Police Officer Tuesday, July 19. Babcock said he loves working for the City of Edina, and hopes to stay here for his entire career.

“I love everybody I work with in the Police Department and in the departments throughout the City,” said Babcock. “Everyone intermixes well, gets along and works well together. Even if you don’t know a co-worker, you can end up having a great conversation with them because of that Edina connection.”

He is also excited to continue to serve the community of Edina. Hearing from residents is what makes his job worth it.

“When I’m out at Centennial Lakes Park, and someone comes up to you and says they are proud of the work the Police Department does, and the City in general, it makes you feel like you’re doing a good job,” Babcock said. “It’s definitely not why you do it, but seeing those thank-you letters makes you feel appreciated and supported.”

Babcock was joined at the swearing-in ceremony by his parents and sister, who traveled all the way from Utah for the special occasion, and other family and friends. He said he was glad they could make it for this momentous milestone, especially his mother, Lynda Babcock, who pinned his badge, No. 156, during the ceremony.
