Fire damages Edina home on Woodland Road

Edina, Minn., March 7, 2016 – The Edina Fire Department was called to the 7000 block of Woodland Road at 1:44 p.m. Thursday, March 3, after a fire alarm was reported by the home’s security system.

Fire crews arrived to find a working structure fire on the home’s back outside wall. The fire extended from the outside wall into the home’s main-level living spaces, where firefighters were able to contain the fire; however, there was smoke damage throughout the home. No one was home at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire was found to have been improperly discarded smoking materials.

“To best prevent house fires, smoking should be done outside,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “Also, before discarding butts and ashes, they should be doused with water to ensure they are properly extinguished.”

The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from the Richfield and St. Louis Park fire departments.
